will be speaking at riaction.sg @ Singapore – 26th Feb

Prayank had asked if any one from the Adobe India team could come and speak at riaction – The first RIA Conference in Singapore. riaction is actually co-sponsored by Adobe, Microsoft and Google.  I would be travelling to Singapore to talk at riaction. I will be presenting at the morning keynote as well as one of the focused sessions later in the afternoon. (Find the agenda here)  I am still working on the topics (Need to freeze it by tonight), but will mostly be talking on the cool new stuff around Adobe Flash Platform.

If you haven’t signed up for riaction yet, you can do that here. For those who have, see you soon!

This is my first ever visit to singapore, so am pretty excited about the whole thing. Also looking forward to meeting up with some of the community experts  and catch up with some old friends.

Note: My visa for singapore is still under process, hopefully will come before I leave (thats on 24th)

Color Picker Swatch Panel without the dropdown in Flex

Okay, the SwatchPanel.as class has always existed in Flex framework. But when I wanted to simply implement a swatch Panel, there was some bit dependency towards the ColorPicker (especially with the casting to ColorPicker in many places). I have a *very hacky* implementation of the SwatchPanel (using the SwatchPanel.as) here which I used in buiding the colrful desktop. I am feeling a little brave here to post the source code here. If any one has a better way of doing this one (I am sure there is, I haven’t gotten the time to ponder as of now :( ), please drop me a comment. (I could use that in my app)

Alternately, If any one wants to use my code to build something quick and dirty, grab the code from here.

Sample Usage:

var s:SwatchPanel = new SwatchPanel();
var wsp:WebSafePalette = new WebSafePalette();
var d:IList = wsp.getList();
s.dataProvider = d;

s.addEventListener(ColorPickerEvent.CHANGE, <Your Event Listener>);

Extract the zip file and maintain the same package structure and you can pretty much use what is in there as-is.

Won Y! open hack day with our ‘built in 90 seconds’ flex – BOSS app!

Me and Raghu (along with Anirudh, Sujit, Sameer, Mayank & Gaurav) were at Yahoo! openhack 2009. Had a ball of a time. We had two hacks to demo – A advanced version of colrul with integrations to boss, maps and twitter APIs and a flex app that we built *during* the elevator pitch in 90 seconds which integrates BOSS Image search to show a simple visualization. I spoke and Raghu coded. We were cheered till the last line of code was written and we completed the ap at the 89th second!

It was fantastic to win an IPod touch (My first ever IPod!). Colrful demo also went on to become a great success with a lot of folks from the crowd asking me to put out the application for preview. The earlier version of colrful is available here for download. If you wanted to try out the version that we built at hackday, check it out here. [Needs Adobe AIR Runtime]

Overall, great event, great job done by Yahoo!

Flex BootCamp at Infy Mysore – Day 1

Just came back after the day 1 of the flex bootcamp at Infosys Mysore.  We had an audience of 150+ developers from various backgrounds (predominantly .NET) at various experience levels. My talk on MXML and ActionScript as well as Flex Event model went on good, there were quite a lot of good questions.

Raghu had a bad throat, but he pulled off his sessions in style as always. The bootcamp hackday is now happening and folks are working overtime to get their applications to win the contest. (Yeah, an IPOD touch is quite a big deal in India!) We met with several talented and enthusiastic developers here and they all were quite impressed by what Adobe Flash Platform can do (given the fact that some of them had their first outing with Flex and ActionScript today).

Off to sleep now, have some more meetings and the hackday evalutation lined up for tomorrow.

@ Infosys Mysore – Day 0

Its been a hectic evening here :) The infy campus is quite nice, buzzing with activity. Met up with a few senior execs at the User eXperience organization of  infy.Followed that one up with a nice dinner at the floating restaurent and a round of bowling. Was fun for sure!

Tomorrow is the day 1 of the flex boot camp. About 200 folks are expected to attend and a few more over video conference. Need to tweak my presentation a little, considering there are quite a few beginner folks around.

Trivia: Infy campus as mysore is 330 Acres with a peripheral road of 5 km circumference. Not sure if anyone walks that whole distance ever! I clicked some pics, will post them once I have some from the bootcamp as well.

Off to infy mysore for Flex Bootcamp Series.

Will be at Infy mysore till friday for Adobe Flex Bootcamp. Planning to run ground up sessions to get folks ramped up in Flex and ActionScript programming. Infosys is one of the top software companies and has a significant number of developers working on various verticals and horizontals. I will be taking two sessions – getting started with MXML and ActionScript as well as plumbing some cool stuff with Flex DataGrid and other Data Controls.

I have never been to the infy mysore campus before (Raghu has been there before and has been telling me thats its quite a cool place. He has also promised me to show me around!)

The all-new AIR Marketplace is launched!

The AIR Marketplace has gone through a makeover and the new avatar is now available at http://airmarketplace.adobe.com

The Marketplace is being re-launched with several key new features to deliver a more user friendly destination for showcasing and downloading AIR applications.  New features include:

  • Easily search and download of applications. Users can rate, review, comment and flag an application to provide valuable feedback. They can share applications with colleagues and friends, and also subscribe to RSS feeds from the Marketplace.
  • A self-service web interface enables developers to manage their profiles and applications.  Developers can also view download statistics, ratings and reviews through a new application dashboard
  • If developers want to sell their application, they can submit the app to the Marketplace. In this case the Marketplace will not enable e-commerce transactions, but the users will be taken to the developers website to conduct the transaction.

Also, dont forget to check out colrful desktop at AIR Marketplace.
